The CAFL Combine in Shanghai and Beijing were huge successes in terms of player turnout, but what about how the players actually performed? Here is a look at the some of the top results from three different drills at the combine. Safe to say that athletically, these guys can hold their own against some of the top athletes in professional football.
The top performer in both the 40-yard dash and broad jump in Shanghai was Zhao Zhennan. He ran a 4.35 40-yard dash, the same time as NFL greats Calvin Johnson and DeSean Jackson. His 3.4 meter broad jump would have been the best result at the entire NFL combine in 2007 and 2010. The top performer in the 20-yard shuttle was Liang Jianbang. His time of 3.99 seconds was better than that of such NFL stars as Devin McCourty (4.07) of the New England Patriots and Emmanuel Sanders (4.10) of the Denver Broncos.
At the Beijing combine, the top 40-yard dash was run by Chen Chao in 4.43 seconds, whose time matched none other than New York Giants star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. The top 20-yard shuttle was claimed by Tsang Tak Shing with a time of 4.13 seconds, faster than Arizona Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu (4.14). And the top broad jump at the Beijing combine belonged to Li Chaoyang, whose 3.15-meter jump was better than that of former Kansas City Chiefs all-pro running back Jamaal Charles (3.10m).
It’s no secret that elite athleticism was on display at the CAFL Combine, but the top results that we saw were on par with, and in some cases exceeded, that of some established elite NFL players. The improvement in performance and ability that homegrown Chinese athletes have demonstrated in such a short period of time has been very impressive, and the league is looking forward to seeing how well that translates to the field in CAFL Super Series II this fall.
